The Potterton Gold GOLD4 4kW Electric Boiler provides heat for a wet central heating system without gas, oil, a flue or a fuel-storage tank. Its slim, lightweight design makes it ideal for smaller properties and installations where space is limited.

This heat-only electric flow boiler works with standard radiators and can operate in either a sealed or open-vented heating system. In addition, you can control it with compatible programmers, room thermostats, pumps and thermostatic radiator valves.

Please note: Product code 94022008 is the radiator version and is not the dedicated underfloor-heating model. Potterton lists a separate GOLD4 underfloor boiler under product code 94022108.

Compact Electric Heating for Smaller Properties

The GOLD4 has a maximum rated output of 4kW at 240V. Therefore, it generally suits smaller heating loads, compact properties, extensions and other well-insulated spaces where a heating engineer has calculated that 4kW provides enough output.

However, you should not choose a boiler by property size alone. Heat loss depends on insulation, glazing, room sizes, construction and local temperatures. Always ask a qualified heating engineer to complete a heat-loss calculation before ordering.

Heat-Only Electric Boiler

The Potterton Gold GOLD4 heats water as it circulates through a wet central heating system. The heated water then flows through radiators to warm the property.

This model does not produce instant domestic hot water like a combi boiler. However, a suitably designed system can use the boiler with an indirect hot-water cylinder. Alternatively, a direct cylinder can heat domestic water through its own immersion heaters.

No Flue or Fuel Tank Required

Because the GOLD4 uses electricity, it does not need a gas supply, oil tank or combustion flue. As a result, installers have more flexibility when choosing a suitable indoor position.

The boiler also produces no combustion gases at the point of use. Nevertheless, the installer must still follow all electrical, plumbing and Building Regulation requirements.

Compatible Heating Systems and Controls

The Potterton Gold electric boiler can work with common wet central heating arrangements, including heating-only, S-plan, Y-plan and zoned systems. It also works with suitable external components such as:

Important Underfloor-Heating Information

This 94022008 model is the radiator version. Potterton designed it with a radiator flow-temperature range rather than the lower temperature range used by its dedicated underfloor model.

Therefore, do not connect this version directly to an underfloor-heating system. If your project includes underfloor heating, ask your heating engineer to specify the correct boiler model and system controls before ordering.

Electrical Installation

The boiler requires a dedicated electrical supply with correctly rated protection and isolation. A qualified electrician or other suitably competent installer must select the cable, MCB, RCD and isolation equipment according to the installation conditions and current wiring regulations.

Before installation, the electrician must also check that the property’s electrical supply has enough capacity for the boiler and all other electrical demand.

This appliance must be earthed. Do not connect the boiler’s main power supply through a standard programmer or room thermostat.

Plumbing and Installation Guidance

Install the boiler upright on a suitable wall in a dry, ventilated and frost-free location. Allow enough space around it for installation, inspection and servicing.

The system must provide at least six litres per minute of flow through the 4kW boiler. Low flow may cause repeated safety shutdowns and could damage the appliance.

In addition, flush the heating system thoroughly and add a suitable corrosion inhibitor. Fit all required safety equipment, including expansion control and a pressure-relief valve on sealed systems.

A qualified and competent installer must install and commission the boiler in line with the Potterton instructions, current wiring regulations, Building Regulations and water regulations.

Domestic Hot Water

The GOLD4 does not provide instant hot water at a tap or shower. If the property needs stored hot water, the system will require a suitable cylinder and controls.

Ask your installer to design the heating and hot-water arrangement before ordering. The cylinder type and boiler size will depend on the property’s heating and hot-water demand.

Potterton Gold Electric Boiler Warranty

The Potterton Gold GOLD4 comes with a one-year on-site parts and labour warranty, subject to the manufacturer’s terms and conditions.

To protect the warranty, install, commission and maintain the boiler according to Potterton’s instructions. Incorrect wiring, poor system flow, contaminated system water or leaks into the boiler may invalidate the warranty.
