Product Description

Reeds Capping Cowl for Disused Chimney Pots

Model: RE-CHIM-CAP

Protect a redundant chimney with the Reeds Capping Cowl for Chimney Pots. This simple chimney cap helps stop birds, rain and debris from entering an unused flue.

The cowl caps the top of the chimney pot while still allowing airflow through the chimney. Therefore, it helps ventilate the unused flue and reduces the risk of trapped moisture and damp.

The adjustable design fits suitable round chimney pots with a diameter from 150mm to 250mm. In addition, the supplied strap fixing kit secures the cowl around the pot without the need to remove it.

Important: Only use this capping cowl on a redundant or disused chimney. Do not fit it to a working flue or a chimney connected to an appliance.

What Is a Chimney Capping Cowl?

A chimney capping cowl closes the main opening at the top of a disused chimney pot. However, it does not fully seal the chimney. Instead, it leaves space for air to move through the redundant flue.

This airflow helps the chimney breathe. As a result, moisture has less chance to collect inside the flue and cause damp around the chimney breast.

The top cover also helps prevent birds, leaves, twigs and rain from entering the chimney. Therefore, it reduces the amount of unwanted material that can collect inside an unused flue.

When Should You Use a Chimney Cap?

Use this cowl when a fireplace, stove or other appliance no longer connects to the chimney. Common applications include:

  • Redundant fireplace chimneys
  • Unused stove flues
  • Disused chimney breasts
  • Chimney pots no longer connected to an appliance
  • Renovated properties with redundant flues

Do not use this cowl on an active chimney. A working solid-fuel, gas or oil appliance needs a suitable terminal that allows combustion gases to escape safely.

Why Ventilate a Disused Chimney?

A completely sealed chimney can trap moisture. Over time, this moisture may lead to damp patches, unpleasant smells or damage inside the chimney breast.

The Reeds Capping Cowl covers the main opening but keeps the chimney ventilated. For best results, the property may also need a suitable ventilation grille at the lower end of the unused flue.

Ask a chimney specialist or builder to check the complete ventilation plan if the property already shows signs of damp.

How to Measure Your Chimney Pot

  1. Measure across the outside of the chimney pot at the fixing position.
  2. Check that the pot measures between 150mm and 250mm.
  3. Inspect the pot for cracks, loose sections or other damage.
  4. Make sure the fixing strap can sit securely around the pot.
  5. Confirm that the chimney no longer serves an appliance.

Do not fit the cowl to a damaged or unstable chimney pot. Repair or replace the pot before installation.

Installation Guidance

  1. Confirm that the chimney is completely disused.
  2. Check that the chimney pot remains sound and secure.
  3. Position the cowl and support legs over the chimney pot.
  4. Place the adjustable strap around the pot and fixing legs.
  5. Tighten the strap evenly until the cowl sits securely.
  6. Check that the cowl remains level and cannot move in the wind.
  7. Make sure the ventilation openings remain clear.

Working at roof level carries a serious risk of injury. Use safe access equipment and ask a competent installer to fit the cowl where necessary.

Maintenance

Check the cowl during normal roof and chimney maintenance. Remove leaves or other debris that may block the ventilation openings.

Also check the strap, support legs and chimney pot after strong winds or severe weather. Replace damaged or loose parts before they create a safety risk.
