Product Description
Mi Fires Solway Large 8kW Multifuel Stove
Product Code: 141-L-SOLWAY
Bring powerful and efficient heat to a larger room with the Mi Fires Solway Large 8kW Multifuel Stove. Its wide body, curved cast-iron door and large viewing window create an attractive centre point for both modern and traditional interiors.
The Solway Large can burn seasoned wood logs and suitable manufactured smokeless fuel. Therefore, it gives you more choice when selecting fuel for your home.
In addition, the stove meets Ecodesign requirements and holds a Smoke Control Area exemption. However, you must install and operate it under the conditions stated in the stove instructions and official exemption.
The high-grade steel body provides strength, while the cast-iron door adds durability. Furthermore, the airwash and tertiary-air systems support a cleaner burn and help keep the glass clearer.
Important: The stove uses a 125mm or 5-inch flue outlet. A competent installer must design the complete chimney and check all required distances before installation.

Powerful 8kW Room Heating
The Solway Large provides a rated output of 8kW. Therefore, it may suit larger living rooms, open-plan spaces, farmhouses and other areas with a greater heat demand.
However, choosing a stove by room size alone can lead to poor results. The installer must also consider insulation, window area, ceiling height and the age of the property.
As a result, you should arrange a heat-loss calculation before ordering. This check will help prevent the room from becoming too warm or the stove from running below its correct operating temperature.
Multifuel Performance
The Solway Large can burn seasoned wood logs and suitable manufactured smokeless fuel. Its multifuel grate allows air to reach the fuel from below, which supports the use of approved mineral fuels.
The product range lists the stove with an 8kW nominal output and efficiency up to 79.6%. Meanwhile, the appliance data plate records tested results for both wood and smokeless fuel.
Always use dry and suitable fuel. Wet wood creates more smoke, reduces heat output and can increase deposits inside the chimney.
Do not burn household coal, treated wood, painted timber, waste or any fuel that the manufacturer has not approved.
Ecodesign Compliant Stove
The Solway Large meets Ecodesign emission and efficiency requirements. Therefore, it offers a cleaner burn than many older stove designs.
Its tertiary-air system sends heated air into the upper firebox. This extra air helps burn gases that may otherwise leave through the chimney.
As a result, the stove can produce more useful heat while reducing some combustion emissions when you use the correct fuel and controls.
Smoke Control Area Exemption
The Solway Large holds an exemption for use in Smoke Control Areas under the stated conditions. Therefore, you may burn authorised wood logs in a Smoke Control Area when the stove meets every condition of that exemption.
The exemption requires a permanent stop that prevents the secondary-air control from closing beyond the stated position. Consequently, the installer must not remove or alter this stop.
Always check the current official exemption conditions and local rules. You can also ask your council whether your property sits within a Smoke Control Area.
Airwash and Tertiary-Air Systems
The airwash system directs air across the inside of the viewing window. As a result, it helps reduce soot deposits and keeps the fire more visible.
However, no airwash system keeps the glass completely clean. Wet fuel, a weak chimney draught or low-temperature burning can still create deposits.
The tertiary-air system also supports a cleaner and more complete burn. Together, these air controls help the user manage the fire and heat output.
Top or Rear Flue Outlet
The Solway Large provides both top and rear flue connection options. Therefore, the installer can select the route that best suits the fireplace and chimney design.
Both outlets use a 125mm or 5-inch connection. However, the complete chimney must meet the requirements of the appliance instructions and Building Regulations.
Never reduce the flue below the size allowed by the stove manufacturer. In addition, use only compatible flue components with the correct temperature and fuel rating.
Outside-Air Connection
The Solway Large includes an outside-air connection manifold. This allows the installer to supply combustion air from outside when the property and installation design require it.
An outside-air connection can help in modern, well-sealed homes. However, the installer must check ventilation, extract fans and chimney draught before deciding how to connect it.
A compatible Mi Fires Direct Ventilation Kit is available separately.
Distance to Combustible Materials
The official stove data states minimum clearances of 500mm to the side and 750mm to the rear from combustible materials.
However, the final distances can depend on the installation layout, hearth, shielding and connecting flue pipe. Therefore, always follow the current installation manual and use the greatest required clearance.
The stove records a hearth temperature above 100°C. Therefore, the installer must provide a suitable constructional hearth that meets the stove instructions and current Building Regulations.
Up to Ten-Year Stove-Body Warranty
The Solway Large may qualify for a warranty of up to ten years on the stove body, subject to the manufacturer’s current terms and conditions.
The cover may depend on correct installation, registration, fuel use, servicing and maintenance. In addition, working parts, glass, seals, paint, firebricks and other service items may carry different cover or exclusions.
Therefore, check the full warranty terms at the time of purchase and keep your invoice and installation records.
Installation Requirements
- Use a suitably qualified and competent installer
- Use a HETAS-registered installer where appropriate
- Complete a room heat-loss calculation
- Inspect and sweep the existing chimney
- Check the chimney draught
- Use a suitable 125mm flue system
- Fit a carbon monoxide alarm in the required position
- Provide the correct permanent ventilation
- Maintain all clearances from combustible materials
- Install the stove on a suitable constructional hearth
- Complete and display the required installation data plate
- Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions
A stove and chimney form one complete system. Therefore, the installer must approve every pipe, adaptor, support and terminal before fitting.
Using the Stove Safely
- Use only suitable seasoned wood or approved smokeless fuel
- Store logs in a dry and ventilated place
- Do not overload the firebox
- Do not burn household waste or treated timber
- Allow the stove to reach a clean operating temperature
- Never leave the stove door open during normal use
- Check the carbon monoxide alarm regularly
- Keep children and vulnerable people away from hot surfaces
Cleaning and Maintenance
Remove ash regularly and keep the air passages clear. In addition, clean the glass only when the stove has cooled completely.
Arrange chimney sweeping as often as the fuel and usage require. For solid-fuel appliances, the chimney should receive a sweep at least once each year and often more frequently during regular use.
A competent person should also inspect the door seals, firebricks, grate, baffle and flue connections. Replace worn parts before using the stove again.
Check Before Ordering
- Confirm that an 8kW stove suits the room
- Check the 530mm x 470mm x 300mm stove dimensions
- Allow extra space for the handle and flue connection
- Confirm that the chimney can accept a 125mm flue
- Check whether you need a top or rear outlet
- Check all distances to combustible materials
- Confirm the constructional hearth requirements
- Check whether you need the direct ventilation kit
- Ask your installer to approve the complete installation
